What do you need?
In most cases a 60cm to 80 cm small dish is sufficient. More important is a
free of obstacles view to the south. All geo-stationary satellites are found
above the equator, here in The Netherlands between 30 degrees east and 30
degrees west and an elevation of approximately 30 degrees pointing south.
You will also need a receiver of witch you have a number of choices. The
kind of receiver is dependent of WHAT you like to receive. If you like to
receive Dutch channels and another 100 additional channels, a so called SECA
Mediaguard receiver would be your first choice. SECA is one of several
decoding technologies that CANAL DIGITAL utilizes to transmit Dutch
channels. If you like to receive more international channels, in addition to
the built in decoder, a receiver containing a CI (common interface) slot is
preferred, that will allow you to decode more channels on one
system/receiver. The systems mentioned here are both digital. There are also
analogue satellite transmissions available and therefore also analogue and
digital receivers on the market. Many receivers, both analogue and digital,
have the ability to be equipped with a motor to turn the dish to your
satellite of choice.
What does it cost?
An important question for many is: "How much will this cost?" The price is
related to what you like to watch. We can assume you have a fixed dish
pointing at the ASTRA satellites (where you will find the Dutch channels),
an appropriate system would cost approximately 550.- Euro. This might sound
expensive but keep in mind that you pay around 120 - 150.- Euro's in annual
cable fees and in 4 years time, your system is paid for, and then receiving
several hundred channels, instead of 25 supplied by cable. The digital
systems provide outstanding picture quality, comparable with DVD, and some
providers transmit already Dolby digital sound! If you prefer to receive
more satellites, a moving dish is recommended, and that cost approximately
700.- Euro's.

For whom is satellite receiving interesting?
Satellite receiving is interesting for people who are not satisfied with the
cable provider/antenna or if you do not receive a particular channel of
interest. For example channels that are focused on an interest or language
group as: Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Brazilian,
Pakistan, Indian etc. The majority of these channels are transmitted decoded
and therefore a subscription is required. This ELBENK COM can provide. The
price for an annual subscription vary between 45.- and 320.- Euro's.
